We must be paying people not to work

This is hard for me to believe ... hard to even grasp the theory of the situation.

I stopped at a Subway sandwich shop a few days ago. It had just opened after sitting dormant for months following its construction.

I asked the manager why it took so long to open, because I was sure his money was tied up in this venture for quite a while now.

"Covid was the main cause for delay," he said. "But, as you can see, we're only open with two of us here. I am severely short-handed," he said as I was fourth in a line of people waiting to be waited on.

"I can't find the help," he said.

Today, about one week after that encounter, I had the opportunity to visit the Subway sandwich shop in Red Lion, which I have visited before and went to open the door to enter and it was locked. It was 10:45 a.m., and I was sure they opened at 10 a.m. every day.

I waited until 11 a.m. and the doors were unlocked, and several customers and I entered to get waited on. There were only two employees, one of them apparently was the manager. On previous visits, there were at least three to five employees working.

When it came to call out my order, I asked the manager "Did you guys change your hours? I thought you opened at 10 a.m.."

"Yes, we did," he replied. "We had to. We are short-handed and no one is looking to work."

"If you now of anyone who would like to work here, please let me know," he added.

Now, with the unemployment rate as high as it is, why is no one seeking work?

There can only be one reason ... people are being paid not to work. Whether it is the stimulus payments (which I don't believe it is), or the extra unemployment benefits and other grants being handed out to people, it is clear no one has the incentive to look for any kind of job.

The more I think about this, the more incensed I become. The government (via the corrupt politicians) is taking my hard-earned tax money and giving it away to others who are not really earning it.

This is what this country has become?

If it has, we reached the point of a communist society already.

    I am saddened by this.
